THE GREAT AMERICAN BLUE HOLE HUNT

According to the USGS, there are 177 place names in the US that have the words "Blue Hole" in them. In our experience, the vast majority of these places are named Blue Hole because they are (or once were) local swimming places. From a rough sampling of these, we think there are many that we don't yet have. Some may no longer exist, some may be silted-in or on private property or otherwise no longer accessible.

Just for fun, would you like to see if you can check out one or two of these that are near you? If you have a GPS locator, that will help a lot too. Sort of a treasure hunt - with the bonus that you MIGHT get a nice swim at the end (or not)!

Below is a link to a fully interactive GOOGLE MAP.  Some notes:

  • Double click to re-center then zoom in (upper left).
  • Switch map type (upper right).
  • Click on the diamond symbol for more info
  • The lat/lon are in ddd mm ss format.
  • BE CAREFUL if you use Google road directions - they are not all on or near roads.

It may take a couple of minutes for the map to load. If you wait and do not see this map, you must "ALLOW ACTIVE/BLOCKED CONTENT" in your browser.

GET A GPS/POI FILE OF ALL BLUE HOLES (right click and "save target/link as")

To see if we already have it, go to the swimingholes.info page for that state and look at the state map and/or use your browser's EDIT>FIND to search for the words "blue hole" and see if it is already there. If it looks like a likely new place, go out and track it down with the map and your GPS locator. Take some photos and get good road directions and tell us all about it!

There is no telling what you may find there, SO BE VERY CAREFUL AND BE RESPECTFUL OF PRIVATE PROPERTY!
