ADOPT A SWIMMING HOLE

Click here to see our home page and learn about swimming holes in other states

Do you have a favorite swimming hole that you visit often and would like to help keep clean? "Adopt a swimming hole" means that you or your group agree to:

1) Visit the swimming hole at least once a month during the swimming season and pick up trash left by people.
2) Always wear GLOVES and STURDY FOOTWEAR when doing this.
3) Dispose of the trash appropriately and legally.
4) Send us a VERY brief, email report at the end of each year about how many times you cleaned up and any problems relating to cleanliness of the site. A picture or two of clean-up activities would be nice too.

As long as you do the above, your names (first names only) or the name of your group and links to some clean-up photos will be shown in the swimming hole listing.

Please send us an E-MAIL if you have a swimming hole you would like to adopt.

NOTE: We have not been authorized by anyone or any organization to pick up trash in any of these places. We assume that picking up trash will be appreciated. So, it is important that:

  • YOU ONLY PICK UP TRASH LEFT BY PEOPLE - not move or disturb anything else (like vegetation, rocks or fallen trees/branches).
  • YOU DO NOT TRY TO TELL PEOPLE HOW TO BEHAVE AT THE SITE - you set an example by your behavior (hopefully) and that is all.
  • Now the fine print:

  • Participating in this program is purely voluntary. If someone gets hurt while cleaning up the area, we cannot assume any liability. We do not sponsor the sponsors.
  • Removing man made trash that can be carried by one person is OK. Anything larger than this is not OK.

Other activities that are not OK include:

  • Removing any permanent or semi-permanent man made items\structures or any portion of those structures (e.g. dams, sluiceways, barricades, fences, railings, pumps, drains…etc).
  • Trying to remove graffiti by chipping away rock.
  • Using chemical cleaners.
  • Trying to remove large objects with machinery or by towing.
  • Removing natural debris.
  • Altering the natural setting in any way.
  • Altering the water flow in any way.
  • Posting any signs at the site denoting that it is sponsored by your group.
